Ponce de Leon was formed in 2002 as the nation’s first Risk Retention Group to serve long-term care facilities. At that time traditional insurers were withdrawing from the market or charging prohibitive prices for inadequate coverage. Facility owners and operators decided to take control by joining together to create their own insurance company.

Under Florida law, long term-care providers (nursing homes and assisted living facilities) are required to have liability insurance, but it was either unavailable or unaffordable. The Uni-Ter Group was engaged to manage the Company. The State of Florida provided a $6 million Surplus Note to help capitalize the Company. We insure long-term care facilities that meet our standards and become shareholders in the Corporation.

We’re proud report that Ponce de Leon is a success. Through the Risk Retention Group, our shareholders obtain the liability protection they need at a price they can afford. Most important, any changes to the program are instituted by the Board and shareholders by proxy. We provide a stable source of coverage that is not subject to the changeable marketing strategies of traditional insurance companies.

Uni-Ter Group provides us with professional management, aggressive defense against unfair claims, risk management services to control losses, underwriting expertise, and leading-edge technological support. Our network of highly qualified agents is growing.
